A Maryland university student is heading back to school this fall with an extra $50,000 after scoring a tier-two prize from the Maryland Lottery’s popular Lucky 777 scratch-off game.
Earlier this week, the Maryland Lottery confirmed that a lucky student won big on the game. The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, chose the alias “Lucky Tiger” when collecting the prize.
The winner, a Towson University student, has been playing lottery games since turning 18. The lucky ticket was purchased at the Onley 7-Eleven, located at 18120 Georgia Avenue in Montgomery County.
The $20 Lucky 777 scratch-off game offers players the chance to win between $20 and $1 million in prizes. The student initially thought he had won just $5,000 after scratching off the ticket. In one of the boxes, he saw the word “Autowin” with a $5,000 prize amount.
“I saw it was a winner, so I gave it to my mom to double-check,” the student, who chose the name “Lucky Tiger” after his school mascot, explained.
However, when his mother examined the ticket, she noticed additional winning boxes that the student had missed. It turns out, he had missed three more “Autowin” boxes worth $5,000 each, plus a 3X symbol with a $10,000 prize.
To confirm the win, the student scanned the ticket and was shocked to find he had actually won $50,000.
“I was ecstatic when I found out it was that much money,” said the grateful student.
The lucky winner and his mother visited the Lottery headquarters this week to claim the prize. The student’s mother mentioned that the windfall would be useful for helping him pay for college.
“It’s his big first win, and he needs it for school,” she said.
The Lucky 777 scratch-off still has many prizes remaining. There are four top prizes of $1 million each still up for grabs, and five more $50,000 tier-two prizes remain. Additionally, 67 tier-three prizes of $10,000 are still in play, along with a range of smaller prizes between $20 and $5,000.
The odds of winning any prize on the Lucky 777 ticket are 1 in 3.10.
